15 Weeks

This week was full of traveling fun!  At the start of the week, I went down to Little Rock, Arkansas to visit my twin brother, Tim and his girlfriend, Natalie.

(yes, I had fun with photoshop :)

We went to a barbeque at an old friend's house, and I got to experience what life is like when everyone you know has a baby or child.  There were several kids there for me to practice my mothering skills with, but I chose the path of less resistance and let their mommies do most of the work while I relaxed and ate corn on the cob.  Care-taking will be there in January...until then, let the kid-free times roll! ha!  It was peculiar to be on the receiving end of so much mommy advice, but always new and interesting.

I also learned that I am woefully under-educated on Baby Lore.  I didn't know there was food to eat to encourage a particular gender, or that I should be consulting a Chinese calendar for Baby Mildren fortune telling, or that I could simply hang a paperclip over my stomach to be really sure of the gender.  I will stick to waiting for the sonogram!

Near the end of the week, James and I went down to southwest Missouri near my hometown of Neosho to go on a float trip with good friends, Danica and Linden.  It was very relaxing, and being around childhood best friends is about as fun as it gets.  I am trying to train Baby Mildren early that summer will be his/her favorite season and that swimming will be his/her favorite summer pastime.

This week I have been reading books gifted to me by friends, and each book has a completely different purpose.

Books I've read this week:

Belly Laughs

This book from was very funny and very silly (thank you, Mandi and Aaron!).  Jenny McCarthy hardly has the final say on pregnancy, but some of her advice was pretty great and I definitely laughed out loud often.  Having skin issues?  McCarthy suggests women have two choices: "wear a buttload of makeup, or stop caring."  Knowing me, I will probably choose the latter :)

Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child

My dear friend and pediatrician Brandi claims this is a wonderfully helpful book (thank you, Brandi!), and just look at the title!  We all know that I live by the motto, "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Beth," so this book is right up my alley.  I have read the first few chapters, and I am already sure this will be one of my go-to books come January!  Of all of the issues of raising a child, none worries me more than getting enough sleep (mine and Baby Mildren's!).  James is in complete agreement, and he plans on reading this book, too.

14 Weeks

This has by far been the best week of my pregnancy!  I waas able to spend the majority of my time reading and catching up on sleep--not bad, huh?  My mom drove through at the beginning of the week, and got Baby Mildren the first baby Jayhawk gear!

Rock Chalk Baby Hawk!

I have had plenty of time this week to read some pregnancy and baby books. I've learned a lot.  Neither James nor I have ever been around young children or babies.  We were both the youngest, and we weren't interested in babysitting.  We can't remember when/if we've ever even changed a diaper.  So I figure it is a good idea to learn as much as possible about newborns and babies before I don't have time to do all the reading.

Books this week:

This was a good book covering pregnancy-through the first year.    It had lots of excerpts from moms, with no judgment passed.

This book was very motivating to keep me exercising!  While I have been a little frustrated that I am not as fit as I was, say, 14 weeks ago, I definitely enjoyed reading about exercise possibilities through pregnancy.  I plan on keeping up the running, weight lifting, and biking as long as healthfully possible.  Yes, I'm still teaching my indoor spin class at the gym and running 2-3 miles a day (not as fast, obviously!).  I even did some yoga this week, though I was disappointed in my lack of flexibility; I had heard that pregnancy loosens the joints and ligaments.  Not mine!

I found Eat Sleep Poop to be the most informative, common sense, non-alarmist, and calming of all the books.  It was written by a first-time dad and pediatrician.  The overall point: If it isn't bothering the baby, don't let it bother you.  I am recommending this book to James.  I felt much more confident about newborns after reading this.

13 Weeks

13 weeks

This has been such a great week!   I am feeling better, and James and I have enjoyed getting to share the news with everyone.  It was fun to hear how some friends had suspected I was pregnant, and others were totally shocked.  I have also enjoyed all of the pregnancy advice, ranging from "Stay Active!" to "Relax away!"  I don't think every mom-to-be enjoys unsolicited advice, but I sure do--I've never done this before, and I love knowing what works for others!

One of the best pieces of advice I am taking is that life doesn't have to stop because of a baby.  Saturday evening we went on a new Lawrence phenomenon, the Pedal Hopper, which is basically a moving bar for a party (one of James' friend/co-worker's birthday) that everyone has to pedal under their bar stool in order to get the bar to move.   This actually turned out to be a minor workout.  I didn't pedal, but those who did definitely worked up a sweat.  It was a great time, and everyone was amazed at what a show stopped the Pedal Hopper turned out to be.  Everywhere we went, people were smiling and taking pictures, and I would definitely recommend the experience!
